How to use PDL

1. What is PDL?

PDL is an email- and web-based communication platform allocating signed up members to exchange information and idea through email (or web-access for gmail accounts users).

Note: Gmail is a free of charge service provided by Google with over 6.3 Gigabytes of storage (as at 17 Jan 2008)

2. EMAIL BASED COMMUNICATION

For non-gmail users, email with immediate delivery is the only option.  For gmail account users (need to register your gmail account with HPPA PDL), there are options for
- web access only
-
a digest version (summarised with one email a day)
- direct email when posting arrive

These can only be modified through PDL website.

3. HOW TO LOG ON TO the PDL website to change viewing options.
(only if you have registered with us (PDL) using your "gmail" account)

Click on Link to "HPPA Discussion List" above  (or http://groups.google.com/group/hppapdl?hl=en) will bring you to a log in page. Log in using your "gmail" email address and password. Once you enter successfully, you could change your personal parameters such as password in "My Account".   For discussion list viewing options (e.g. Digest Mail), you can click "Edit my membership" on the right hand side of the page.  You can then see the various options for your selection.

4. REPLYING TO EMAIL

In Parents Discussion List (PDL), whenever you receive and reply to (by hitting the REPLY button in MS OUTLOOK EXPRESS) the Discussion List, the default "Reply To:" address is the Discussion List's email address (i.e. hppapdl@googlegroups.com, not the sender's). This means that the email you are about to send/reply will be sent to ALL participants in the PDL. Be mindful about sending long email reply, before you hit the reply button, think about the following:

* Do you really want to send to ALL participants in the DISCUSSION LIST?
* If you only intend to reply to the sender, then make sure the TO address is the sender's address (you may cut and paste the sender's email address or just re-type his email address);
* Do you really want to append or enclose ALL the previous discussion or should you just keep the content to ONLY your message? If so, delete all previous content before hitting the SEND button.

5. SOME BASIC GROUND RULES
To ensure that the List can continue to serve its purpose (i.e. to serve as a forum for the exchange of views and to raise issues of significance affecting most, if not all parents), It is important to lay down some ground rules. For a start these are as follows:

1. Matters concerning individual cases should not be posted to the List as far as possible. For example, there have been queries with regard to transport arrangements for a particular student, or for participation in a particular activity. Such queries should be addressed to the Form Teacher or the school admin.

2. Raise only issues that affect the majority of parents, or of general interest. For example, the issue of CCA has served to clarify doubts, which benefits all parents. However, do not raise cases of an individual nature.

3. When responding, or adding on to a posting, be mindful of the length of the mail. With many parents participating, each posting adds up to a lot of space on our mailbox. When a posting is to be addressed to an individual, I suggest you address your mail directly and privately to the person concerned. For example, Mary made inquiries about school transport or piano teacher - all replies should be posted directly to Mary, and not to the PDL.

4. Please observe basic net etiquette. This year we have been fortunate that mails have been cordial, in the spirit of sharing and information seeking. There have been instances in the past where mails became personal and belligerent. We do welcome constructive engagement.

5. Every discussion, as titled in the subject heading of the mail, is a thread, meaning that all postings on this subject are linked into a thread. This makes for easy referral subsequently. If you wish to bring up a different topic, please start a new thread, otherwise, members who are interested in a certain subject will get confused, even annoyed, at reading something which clearly does not belong.

6. Do not advertise in the PDL, unless it is not for profit and for a good cause.

We hope that these simple ground rules will encourage more participation, and they are not unduly restrictive. These rules are not exhaustive, and we may add or modify them in the course of time.

6. SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE - DIY

There are many benefits in joining HPPA. One of which is to join PDL.

There are several ways you may SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE to the PDL.
One easy way is to use the email commands. To SUBSCRIBE to PDL, just send an email to

hppapdl-subscribe@googlegroups.com (or click the subscribe link on the top of this page)

Your request will be processed by the HPPA PDL ADMINISTRATORs. Alternatively, you can send an email to the head of membership.  Currently (2008 - 2009) Mr Malcolm Choi (choiwm@yahoo.com)

Similarly, to UNSUBSCRIBE, substitute the word SUBSCRIBE with UNSUBSCRIBE
and send out the email command: -

hppapdl-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com

For Gmail users, you can unsubscribe through PDL website as shown in paragraph 3 above.  The unsubscribe function is under "Edit my membership".
